Nestled in the Heart of cider making country Hereford can be traced back to the early 7th century AD when the Saxons made it one of their fortified encampments. Its name apparently comes from the Old English “ford used by the army”.

Despite civil wars and world wars many old and interesting buildings have survived. Not least the beautiful Cathedral with its impressive stone work and stained glass windows. It also holds within its walls one of the most famous documents from medieval times, The Mappa Mundi.

In 1974 the former counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire were amalgamated to form Hereford and Worcester County Council. The new county had an area of 1,516 square miles and was divided into nine districts. However, change brings on more change and in April 1998 a new unitary authority for Herefordshire and a county council for Worcestershire replaced the former body. The new Herefordshire Council incorporates the former district councils of South Herefordshire, Leominster and Hereford City.


Good road and rail links in and out of Hereford make it a very desirable area to commute to and from work. However when you see some of the most breath taking countryside in the country Hereford and its Shire come in to its own. Birmingham Airport is within easy travelling time and the industrial conurbation of the Midlands is never too far away.
