Once a Roman waterway, later a 16th century port and today a city centre riverside resort, Exeter`s Historic Quayside is a wonderful and popular tourist attraction.
It is just 5 minutes from the High Street and the Cathedral. It has been sensitively developed by Exeter City Council over the last 20 years to create a lovely waterside area for people to live, work and have fun.
The Quayside offers a unique collection of shops, restaurants and outdoor activities which blend with the attractive 17th and 18th century warehouses and buildings to give a charming mix of past and present. Picnicking, walking, browsing, taking a boat trip, visiting the Quay House Visitor Centre or just messing about on the river, are just some of the enjoyable pastimes for visitors and residents alike to enjoy.
Whether in search of antiques, crafts, or the perfect souvenir you will find everything from pocket sized mementos to hand-crafted furniture, Exeter Crystal to silks from China or craft.
The Quayside inns, tea rooms and restaurants offer everything from traditional cask ales to coffee, light al fresco lunches to cream teas and Italian specialties to home-made Devon ice creams.
Mega Bowl Ten Pin Bowling, the Riverside Leisure Centre and the Quayside night clubs are all nearby for the active visitor providing a wealth of activities for families and young adults. Look out for the water-based events that take place each year. From Raft Racing to Dragon Boat Racing to canoe competitions and the Regatta.
Enjoy the outdoor life and take to the water in a Canadian canoe or pedalo. For a more relaxing excursion why not try a canal cruise. Alternatively stick to dry land and hire a bicycle either for a few hours or the whole day. With no closed season, the river Exe and the canal are a paradise for anglers. Visitors will need a permit from the Civic Centre or contact the River and Canal Manager on 01392 274306.Marvel at the many historic buildings on and surrounding the Quayside and travel back in time. There are the lovely Georgian terrace houses on Colleton Crescent, the 17th and 18th century Quayside cellars and warehouses, a testament to Exeter`s seafaring past. The Customs House may appear familiar. This could be because it, and the Quayside itself, were used as part of the set for the filming of the BBC`s TV drama series the Onedin Line. Just behind the Quayside you will find part of the Roman City Wall.
